I think techniques like transcendental meditation that purely focus on observation of the breath can provide benefits but may not help with eradicating impurities at the deepest levels. Then there are other techniques (Zen, Tibetan, etc) which may help with this goal but I'm not too sure about it.
However, I believe that most sages and saints who have achieved liberation have practiced something similar to Vipassana even though they may not have used that term/label or ever articulated their techniques in a similar manner.
I have experience only with Vipassana (just for a few years) so I can't pretend that I have a precise answer to the question.
Curious - are there any other techniques apart from Vipassana meditation?
